WHAT?
The Richmond Neuter Project is a collaborative effort to encourage spaying and neutering of pit bulls within Richmond City.  The first iteration of this event will focus on the Church Hill area of Richmond; pit bulls and pit bull mixes from this area
will be spayed or neutered for free on October 28, 29 & 30, 2008.

WHY?

Our program initiative has decided that we need to take an extra step to reach pit bull owners. There are far too many pit bulls being born and far too few good homes to take them in.   Practically one in every four dogs in your local shelter is a pit bull or a pit bull mix.  These pit bull type breeds are very popular and often end up reproducing.  As a result, many pit bulls and pit mixes end up homeless and need of shelter.   We are hoping that this program will persuade pit bull owners to have their dog altered.  This program is targeted at a specific pet population due to the high numbers of these dogs in the shelter system.

There are already several low-cost spay/neuter programs available to the general population of pet owners in the Richmond and surrounding areas.  The Richmond SPCA also provides free spay/neuter for Pit bulls, pit mixes, Rottweiler and Rottweiler mixes to those who call for an appointment and are able to provide their own transportation.
